“The Mother of All Picnics”

For those of you that weren't able to attend, we had a wonderful picnic on the Canal at Jerry and Carolyn Shimek's vacation home at "Stetsons" on the 1st of August.  Many thanks to Jerry and Carolyn for being generous and fantastic hosts.  And thank you to the many classmates who assisted in making this happen.  The 42 people who attended enjoyed a beautiful day, quality burgers, dogs & oysters from the BBQ, great side dishes brought by attendees, and most importantly a relaxed atmosphere for leisurely visiting with classmates.  The day ended all to quickly.  The good news is Jerry says "Let's do this again!"

Retired 3
After retiring from the State and working another 7 years at the credit union, I left to stay home, as my husband was terminally ill.  Since I've been by myself I have learned to be pretty self-sufficient.  None of my family lives close by but I can get in the car or on a plane and be with them.

I'm still living in my house which has a big yard and that keeps me pretty busy.  I bowl once a week with some gals who I previously worked with at the State.  (I can't say that my scores are all that exciting) but they haven't kicked me off the team, yet.  Spare time?  What is that?  I seem to be busy all the time.

I'm looking forward to our 50th reunion and hope to see a lot of long-time friends there.  I look back on our years together in school and am really thankful that so many of us have all kept so close and truly do think and care about one another.

Ken, all the time that you have spent keeping up our web site has really been appreciated by a lot of people.  You only need to check the number of hits on our web page to realize that.  A BIG "Thank You"!!!

Entrepreneur and Grandfather EricColes.com Married 4
June 24, 2010

Just when you think life is settling down, it isn't.  I had helped to start a pharmaceutical company in China in 1994.  We had not been actively involved in its operation up to four years ago.  In 2006 my partner asked if I would like to come to China for a year and help run the company, Nanjing MeiRui Pharma Company Ltd (www.meirui.com).  We thought it could use a little western style management.  Well I did and have spent most of the last four years here in Nanjing and now in Shanghai, P. R. China.  This is a real adventure and the most exciting thing I have ever done professionally.  Yoiu can't describe what it is like here in China. All I can say is, everything you know about life in China is wrong.  This is the most capitalistic country I have ever seen.

Arlene spends most of her time at our home in Chicago and also runs the financial operation of our parent company, Pagoda Pharma Group, Inc.  We see each other every day thanks to Skype (eric.coles3) and also have video calls with the four of our families (4 kids and 9 grandkids) almost every week.  Not the same as being there, but we get by.

Both Arlene and I do try to keep physically in shape.  She is active in the local health club and I still do my 5 mile walk and workout every morning at 5:00 a.m., only now it's from my apartment on Huahai Zhonglu down to Zhujihua Park and back.  It's a peaceful period and still a good time to think and enjoy the start of the day.
