“The Mother of All Picnics”

For those of you that weren't able to attend, we had a wonderful picnic on the Canal at Jerry and Carolyn Shimek's vacation home at "Stetsons" on the 1st of August.  Many thanks to Jerry and Carolyn for being generous and fantastic hosts.  And thank you to the many classmates who assisted in making this happen.  The 42 people who attended enjoyed a beautiful day, quality burgers, dogs & oysters from the BBQ, great side dishes brought by attendees, and most importantly a relaxed atmosphere for leisurely visiting with classmates.  The day ended all to quickly.  The good news is Jerry says "Let's do this again!"

August 11, 1943 RV park owner/manager www.ElwhaDamRVpark.com Widowed 3

Oh, how time flies….
Somehow my 3 lovely daughters managed to grow into wonderful human beings while I was still a kid; and they have given me 6 terrific grandchildren, the best in the world, I’m quit sure!
After the last daughter declared she was “grown up”, I laced up my work boots and headed for Alaska What an adventure:  I worked my way from Anchorage to Fairbanks to Dutch Harbor and across the Bering Sea, to Dillingham and back to Anchorage.  I’ve had the privilege of making some great friends and of seeing massive herds of reindeer, an ocean full of whales, sunrises and sunsets that touched my soul, and even drove my snow machine in a 300 mile dog sled race with all of the great Iditarod winners (Martin Buser, Susan Butcher and 100 other “mushers”). Sleeping in snow at -20 degrees is not as unpleasant as one might think.  I was able to visit numerous native villages while working for the Alaska State Troopers and then the Public Defenders office.  I assisted in several murder investigations and supervised the Concealed Hand Gun program for the state, and somehow managed to build and sell a duplex.
    Then the phone call came.
When I was in my late 50’s my mom (Gladys Kemp) called.  She said it was “time for me to grow up” and to come home; she wanted to live with me.  And so began a new adventure.
In 2001 mom and I bought the Elwha Dam RV Park here in Port Angeles.  We have both slowed down a little and now confine our adventures to the 17 acres of our park.  Of course, mom still bowls twice a week and consistently wins all of the quarters for high game/high series.  Mom also does most of the shopping, gardening, and cooking, leaving me free to “run the business” and participate in several organizations relating to development and tourism in our community.
I apologize for being so remiss about staying in contact with classmates.  Thanks so much to Jerry Bloomfield for calling his prom date recently and inviting me to have lunch with him, Laurie & Carol Sommers, Neal Close and Steve Paulsrude.

After hearing of Gary Schneider’s passing and getting a call from Jerry saying he was leaving for another season of being a bush pilot in SW Alaska, life and old friends suddenly seem to become very precious.
Recently I’ve been in contact with Patricia (Pierce) Nicholson (Patty could use our prayers right now) and Darrell Miklethun (Darrell has lived in the same lovely home on Hamersley Inlet for over 30 years!  Ken Vanderwal stopped by for an RV site.  We recognized each other immediately (as soon as we exchanged names lol)

I’d love to hear from anyone who has a few minutes to chat via e-mail, better yet, if you have an opportunity to travel to the North Olympic Peninsula, stop by our little corner of paradise and say “Hi”.  If you let us know you’re coming, mom might even have a fresh apple pie ready, the coffee is always on in our kitchen.

Best wishes to each of you.

PS: Please update your listing….we might not recognize each other if we pass on the street!
PSS:  Remember how beautifully Penny (Edman) Zimmer sang the Lords Prayer in assembly?  I’d love to hear that again.
